The powerful abstraction provided by network storage virtualization software has finally and fully taken  shape. Its compelling economic value is derived from the software’s ability to compensate for many of the  undesirable and costly properties of managing disk hardware―especially the antiquated and wasteful  methods of physically allocating and moving disk space.
